action takes place. It can be anywhere, but its very important: try to imagine Lawrence of Arabia without the desert or Titanic without the ocean and it becomes immediately apparent
how vital setting is. This paper considers the setting of the film The Notebook, and three ways in which it was used. Discussion The film is a romantic story about
everlasting love; literally, in this case, a love that overcomes all obstacles. The story is about a couple at different points in their lives: we first meet them in the
present in a nursing home; then we see them decades earlier, at the start of World War II (The notebook 2004). In effect, there are two stories running parallel to
each other, which makes it very important that they be clearly differentiated; this is why changing the setting is vital. Nobody wants to end up in a nursing home,
but Allie has Alzheimers and is needs constant care; its here that Noah reads the story of their love to her to reawaken her memories and bring her back to
him (The notebook 2004). But even though the nursing home is obviously clean, well-run and high-class, its still a nursing home-a limited environment. It is confined, closed-in; there are caretakers,
