the House of Usher. In fact, setting is so important and such a vital component of this story that in many ways it is the story itself. To
understand the ways in which setting becomes such a significant element in this story, it is important to understand both the setting that Poe created as well as the function
of that setting for the purpose of the story. From the beginning of The Fall of the House of Usher, Poe uses
the setting of the story to establish the mood and tone. This author has created an environment that is dreary, bleak, dark, depressed, and fully of death and decay.
More specifically, the story takes place primarily in the Usher family mansion, which is situated in a very isolated location, far apart from other humanity and from life.
The area that surrounds the mansion is also bleak and unsettling, and one gets the idea from the narrator that it isnt a place anyone would purposely make their way
toward. Inside the mansion the aura doesnt improve. The mansion is a dark, foreboding place and the narrator uses phrases
such as "bleak walls" and minute fungi overspread on the whole exterior" to describe the place of which he speaks. There is definitely a gothic feel to the mansion
which is recognized by the heavy draperies, the dampness of the rooms, the dark woods and heavy antiques, and even the smell that permeates every corner of the residence.
