plays of our time, or perhaps of any time. It is a powerful story that seems to transcend many different dreams and thoughts of the 20th century, giving us a
man who loses his pride, his ambition, and his identity. It is a relatively deep and yet straightforward play that seems to rely very little on the surrounding environment, or
the setting. For the most part we are presented with a typical home, and very traditional settings, settings which are impressions of everyday environments. And, yet it is in this
simplicity, this easily recognizable and subtle setting that we are truly offered the essence of the play. Bearing this in mind the following paper examines what others have said in
regards to particular productions and their use of setting in interpretation of Millers play. The Stage In the first production to be examined the author, Shaner, states that
"In Anita Khanzadians smart staging, the pathos begins the moment the lights go up on the forlorn silhouette of Eddie Jones as Willy Loman, a shambling hulk of a man,
weighed down by Weltschmerz and two shabby suitcases" (15). In all honesty, this is all this author states concerning the staging of this play. However, we can gain a great
deal of understanding in this particular line. We note that the staging is "smart" which tells us that the staging is perhaps crisp and very detailed, yet not eccentric or
overpowering in terms of shadowing the story itself. We gain the knowledge that lighting is essential when we imagine the lone Willy burdened by his articles. From these perspectives we
