Yet, when blurting out scientific finds-whether in the realm of social science or medicine-- one has to wonder as to the integrity of the data. After all, many studies are disputed. It is sometimes difficult to discern which studies are credible and which are not. It is because so much information is disseminated that it becomes important to look at the idea that principles of science and ethical guidelines for science are important in research. People use the claims of studies to guide their lives. They eat margarine instead of butter. They do aerobic exercise instead of yoga. They discipline their children according to the latest trends. People do base their decisions on the latest studies and while not all studies are important, they can be and further, the reliability of scientific studies go to the credibility of academia. In examining the reliability of studies, an important component is sample quality. Fitzgerald and Cox talk about the quality of a sample and the importance of that (94). Authors talk about probability sampling and random sampling. These are important areas. Obviously, if sampling is skewed to reveal particular tendencies, then a scientific study will not be valid. For example, if someone who is studying drug addiction happened to be an addict and asks all of his friends at Narcotics Anonymous to participate in the study, the result will be skewed.
