we may not see them often and although they are not primary characters. In Shakespeares Othello we have several minor characters who serve many different purposes. The following paper examines
one of those characters, Roderigo, and discusses the importance of his role in the story. Roderigo First and foremost we find that Roderigo is an important character in
the story primarily because he was once a suitor of Desdemona. He still cares deeply for her and that puts him in a position of vulnerability. This is something that
Iago knows, and Iago uses throughout the entire play. Roderigo is Iagos pawn, and Iagos plans cannot truly take place without a pawn. So, first of all, Iago uses Roderigos
love of Desdemona to manipulate Roderigo and get Roderigo to do what he asks. As one author notes, "Roderigo, a soldier in Othellos army, is in love with Desdemona and
is deceived by Iago into thinking that Desdemona holds some affection for him" (Iago as the Hero of Othello). The major point is that if Roderigo believes that Desdemona
still cares for him, he will do the work of Iago, spying and thus relaying all the information Iago requires in his nasty plot. If he did not have Roderigo
he would have no one to do this task for him. And, Iago could not have well done all the spying himself for that would have looked suspicious and his
plans would not have worked. But, because he has Roderigo to spy and give him information, giving it innocently and trustingly, Iago is able to deceive Roderigo and all others.
