that the right employees are hired, but looking at issues such as skills development and management, performance management and motivation. Two of the key elements which are interactive with many
areas of business are the way in which resourcing and the reward function take place within the HRM function. Looking at a definition of HRM it
becomes apparent that these areas of consideration are two of the key functions. Price (2001) defines HRM as "A philosophy of people management based on the belief that human resources
are uniquely important to sustained business success. An organization gains competitive advantage by using its people effectively, drawing on their expertise and ingenuity to meet clearly defined objective. HRM is
aimed at recruiting capable, flexible and committed people, managing and rewarding their performance and developing key competencies". Both resource issues and reward are directly referred to within the definition. These
are subject, which when studies, may be seen to impact not only across the entire HRM field, but across the entire business. To appreciate this each subject may be considered
in turn. Resourcing may be seen as making sure that the right resources are available when needed, that they are in
the right place and the right time, and that they are used in the most effective manner. The concept of ensuring the right resources agree in place is not new.
