One excellent example of a danger from internal circumstances would be the accidental discharging of a weapon due to negligence on the enlisted soldiers part. In order to effectively uphold the quality of vigilance that is essential to the character of the United States Armed Forces, it is essential that soldiers understand the threat presented by improperly maintained and cleared weapons, as well as the proper procedures for clearing those weapons. This paragraph helps the student examine the problem of negligent discharges in the army. Despite the reputation of the United States Army for discipline and self-control, there are always aberrant instances of soldiers failing to uphold the tenets of their training. Often, these instances of negligence amount to more than just a break in protocol; they often cause substantial harm or even fatal injury to innocent parties. In 2006, the Army reported six instances of soldiers dying due to negligent discharges from improperly maintained weapons; a number that has only grown since (Adams, 2007). Most all of these incidents share similar circumstances. A fatality in October 2006 occurred after a soldier, who had been drinking alcohol, failed to clear the chamber of a loaded firearm before showing it to a friend (Adams, 2007). Then, in January 2007, another soldier who had been drinking decided to point his own weapon at himself as a "joke"; unfortunately, despite the protestations of his fellow soldiers, he pulled the trigger of the supposedly unloaded weapon and killed himself (Adams, 2007). Even more absurdly, a soldier, on the same day as the above incident, incompletely went through the process of clearing a weapon, merely pulling the slide back and performing a visual inspection; after that, he "jokingly" placed the weapon to ...
