the prison population. It seems that today, prison is the answer for everything from winning the war on drugs, to keeping dangerous felons out of the mainstream. However, the majority
of the prison population is not the dangerous lot that many want to believe. Rather, the prisoners are just people. The average person should care about prison conditions, but most
do not give it a second thought. Rather, they have a "me" against "them" attitude. Most people hide any legal transgressions and depict themselves as model citizens. Most people have
done something illegal such as driving too fast, driving slightly over the alcohol limit, or forgetting to report a small lottery winning on their tax returns. They may cross against
the light-a ticketable offense-or they may simply ignore the cries of a child next door because they do not want to get involved. Technically, there are crimes ordinary people do
commit but they are still considered upstanding citizens. In truth, it is hard to live the letter of the law exactly because life is messy. It is often ambiguous.
Sometimes, an individual is just hours from being caught for some small crime or they might be erroneously charged with a major crime. Indeed, the law is not perfect, which
is why the average citizen should care about the prison system. Even if they do not break the law, and they do not know anyone in prison, they should care
because many of the laws that require prison time are unfair, and many of the prisons are inhumane. Any human being who cares about others should get involved with prison
reform. Throughout history, many people have decided that prison reform is a calling. Most notably Angela Davis, once a Black Panther member and an educator, is a true activist
