with facts and the truth. The public does not necessarily want opinions in general news media, for they can turn to their favorite news discussion program, or their favorite magazine
or newspaper for truly opinionated views of what is going on. When we, as citizens of any nation, want the news, we want objective news that simply tells us the
facts and allows us to think for ourselves. However, most media today is not objective. It is often considered to be conservative or liberal in terms of presentation. But, this
is not perhaps as it should be. Unless a news writer is writing for a specific show that clearly leans in one political direction or another, they should always write
the news in an objective manner. The following paper examines the reality and importance of objectivity in news writing. Reality In examining the reality, as perceived through the
eyes of different individuals, this section will present the opinions of various authors in their examination of objectivity, or the lack of objectivity in the media. In doing so the
information presented strives to be objective in itself so that the student can gain a more broad understanding of the perspectives regarding objectivity in the media. One author looks
at the war on Iraq and states that, "Something quite odd is going on with media coverage of this war. Critics on all sides of the political equation have historically
attacked the media for bias in one direction or another, but rarely were willing to admit that they were doing so on behalf of biases of their own."1 In essence,
it appears as though many journalists have essentially tossed "the old objectivity rulebook out the window as a result of the attacks of September 11."2 This often leaves the public
