by environment (nurture). Now with the advances in genetic research it has been shown that our genes (nature) play a big part in determining who we are and how
we behave. Genetic correlations have been found for various behaviors, not the least significant of which is alcoholism. Genetics have even been linked to personality types. Indeed,
it is an accepted fact in most scientific circles that our genes determine to a large degree who we are and how we behave. Some research, however, continues to
contest the contention that genes alone determine our actions. Many researchers contend that it is a combination of genes and environment, i.e. nature
and nurture, that determines behavior. Given the potential retributions of an emphasis of the importance of genes over environment, it is no wonder that many are reluctant to place
full responsibility for behavior and personality on genetics. Peele (1995) notes: "If who we are is determined from
conception, then our efforts to change or to influence our children may be futile. There may also be no basis for insisting that people behave themselves and conform to laws.
Thus, the revolution in thinking about genes has monumental consequences for how we view ourselves as human beings".
Peeles reference to laws, of course, can be extended to encompass any societal dictate. As opposed to genetic predeterminants which
are really a newcomer in scientific research, the role of nurture when it comes to personality and behavior has been under scrutiny for generations. This role is encapsulated in
