clearly not the quintessential Communist Party leader, who was usually a somber figure dressed in drab gray with no aspect of his family life ever revealed to the general public. These were the Russian equivalent of the Kennedys, and Gorbachev would prove to have both style and substance when it came to Russian-American relations. It could not possibly have been foreseen that when Gorbachev was born in the small southern Russia village of Privolnoye in March of 1931 that he would be instrumental in bridging the gap between Communist and capitalist ideologies that always seemed to be impenetrable barriers to a successful superpower relationship (Tolstaya, 1998). When Gorbachev ascended to Communist Party leadership after the death of Konstantin Chernenko in March of 1985, he was an unknown quantity to the American public. But the charismatic Russian visionary quickly changed that with his expressed admiration for the Western concepts of freedom and democracy (Allison and Blackwill, 1991). But Cold War warrior, U.S. President Ronald Reagan, was skeptical, and the first formal meeting between the two world leaders was the Geneva Summit, which took place in November of 1985. In what would prove to be an extremely beneficial meeting, Gorbachev and Reagan developed a personal relationship based upon mutual admiration, and the humanization of the two men would make the dream of a peaceful coexistence an attainable reality (Farnham, 2001). The following year, Gorbachev would implement a dramatic series of domestic and foreign policy initiatives known as perestroika (the transformation of the Soviet economy and cumbersome bureaucracy) and glasnost (political openness) (Tolstaya, 1998). In October of 1986, the historic Reykjavik summit commenced, with General Secretary Gorbachev and President Reagan limiting their discussions exclusively to arms control (Farnham, 2001).
