once screamed when she became passionate about a topic, but her shrill voice was aired over and over again by right wing media. When a male politician cried years ago,
it was something that made headlines. Is he having a nervous breakdown? Is Hillary insane? These are the ideas that seem to be bandied about when people in high places
react with ordinary emotion. Indeed, on the therapists couch, one is prompted to cry and handed tissues, but when one is in the limelight they had better keep their emotions
in check. On one hand, it is important to let emotions out. Studies have shown that keeping anger bottled up will lead to disease, but of course, it may
also end up as one, large angry outburst eventually. However, there is a difference between keeping things under control, and truly being able to manage emotions. In exploring this compelling
topic, several authors have good advice. These authors each clarify emotional competency as well as the outcome of poor emotion management, and each do so through the use of anecdotes.
Golemans (1997) book entitled Emotional Intelligence provides an essential guide to emotional competency, but other authors who will be discussed also add to the literature on the subject by visiting
fables or creating stories to demonstrate the importance of emotion. Goleman (1997) explains that emotion is something that is in part conditioned from early youth (Goleman, 1997). That is,
emotions are in part learned and have their roots in childhood. Of course, this does not mean that people cannot change their programming. There are in fact ways to control
emotions and keep things in check and Goleman (1997) demonstrates this. However, what is really important is simply recognizing that emotional intelligence is something important in the scheme of things
