carries the card throughout their military career, changing it only when they are promoted or, in the case of women, if they marry and change their name. In addition, the
military provides such things as medical and dental care for its members and their dependents free of charge; it also provides post exchanges and commissaries where personnel can shop, and
where prices are much lower than in civilian stores. In order to use these facilities, its necessary to present an ID card; a military ID card "is issued to prove
eligibility" to use these facilities (Sullivan, 2005, p. 2). This is particularly important for dependents when they are left at home while the military member is transferred to a combat
zone or to some other unaccompanied duty. That leaves the family members on their own. According to a military website that provides information to dependents, the military ID card "is
an essential part of accessing your benefits, without it you may not be able to get on base, go to the commissary, child care, or get health care" (Military ID
card, 2009). Its also necessary to show current ID in a number of other situations. For instance, the Marine Corps supply center in Barstow, California, makes presentation of the ID
card a requirement for registering a vehicle on base: "The driver must present a current and valid state registration ... military ID card or civilian/contractor badge or check in sheet"
