be one of the most important skills an individual can acquire. Our gift of hearing allows us to safely navigate our world and to learn. That first advantage
is, in many ways a passive one yet it is directly connected to learning as well. We learn that certain sounds indicate danger is near, that our mothers voice
is a beacon as to her location, that the suitability of some foods can be discerned by listening to their sounds. We typically learn such things very early in
our lives. Later in our lives we place importance on other sounds. The sounds of our car engines, for example, assure us that everything is functioning as it
should be or warn us that it is not. We learn that when the spattering sounds of grease in a frying pan reach a certain level of intensity we
are not only probably cooking our food to quickly but are also risking a painful grease burn. The sounds of our
everyday world thus hold much importance for us and we listen to those sounds mostly passively. Passive listening is something that we do innately. Active listening, however, takes
time and dedication to develop. Active listening allows us tremendous power in our world. It is a critical part of our education and even our ability to communicate
effectively with others. When we think of communication we most often think of the process of communicating. There is another
