schools did promote the language. It seems that not only does a good part of the world speak Spanish, but also that many new immigrants speak the language as well.
This is obvious due to the fact that there are often multilingual ATMS and literature in the country. A student notes that based on free trade agreements and demographic patterns,
it was a good idea, but adds that in the past few years, business leaders now recommend that people learn Mandarin. Indeed, with more trade with China, it makes sense
to learn a language that allows conversation with people from that country. The concept that language is important in the scheme of things is nothing new. Historically, the American school
systems would include a language at the middle and high school levels. Language is a requirement to attend many universities today. In general, students often forget the languages they acquired,
and some experts claim that younger children better assimilate language instruction. There is also a more diverse culture than ever and people who speak a language other than English tend
to make sure it is passed on to the children. While Americans are exposed to language a bit, there is a sense that language takes a back seat to
other disciplines such as reading, science and mathematics. In reading Thomas Friedmans book The World is Flat, it becomes increasingly clear that language will be essential in the future. In
the book, Friedman (2005) examines the topic of globalization and how the world has changed. The idea that the world is "flat" is of course not to be taken literally.
