(as cited in Zauderer, 1992, p. 12). Theologians often define integrity as distinguishing between good and evil whereas philosophers tend to describe it as knowing between right and wrong. Integrity is developed through a persons character by role models and through education. It has nothing to do with an individuals appearance. Instead, integrity reveals what a person looks like on the inside. The definition of integrity is not nearly as important as how integrity is defined within oneself. It is developed and demonstrated in the home, in society, at school, and in the workplace. Integrity reflects a persons moral attitudes and judgments. Like a living thing, integrity must be instilled at a very early age and nurtured in order to take root and grow. Personal integrity is first established in the home, with parents serving as their childrens "first and often most influential teachers" (Delattre & Russell, 1993, p. 23). Children learn by example, which is why parents must always consider the moral consequences of their actions. If a child observes a parent giving a grocery store clerk the extra change he or she received in error during checkout, the child will tend to behave accordingly in similar situations. School is likely the first socialization children receive, and how they interact with their peers is often based upon the level of integrity applied in the home. The children who bully others tend to have little moral foundation at home and therefore cannot distinguish between right and wrong behavior. This is why it is incumbent upon teachers to educate students on ethics and on how to develop moral character.
