Law enforcement, after all, is not just another job. It is a profession. To excel in
that profession a law enforcement officer must have an adequate academic background. Dougherty (1996) distinguishes professions from mere occupations as follows:
"The term [profession] traditionally was assigned to those callings in which one professes to have acquired some special, useful knowledge and secondarily to
those arts or services dependent upon such knowledge". Education is the most expedient means
of obtaining that knowledge. Police officers today do not just walk the beat. They are administrators and educators themselves (Peak, 2002). Senior officers are expected to train
their subordinates and all officers must have excellent communication and organizations skills (Peak, 2002). Many officers have promoted in the job because they have refined a specific area of
expertise. Most often these areas of expertise require high level problem solving, investigative techniques, and knowledge of the law, issues, trends, and policies (Peak, 2002).
