explains why its important to follow classroom rules. Discussion There are times when rules have to be broken; for instance, the "never talk to strangers" rule should go out the
window if someones in trouble and he sees a uniformed policeman. By all means, break the rule and get help. But there are also two rules that should never be
broken: "Follow every rule you dont understand" and "Only break rules you fully understand and have good reason to break" (S?lensminde and S?lensminde, 2008). The reasoning here is obvious: if
a person doesnt understand a rule, its best to assume its there for a good reason and follow it, rather than ignoring it and finding out too late that the
warning about the table saw was there to prevent injury. Likewise, if a person does fully understand a rule, but its useless, silly, outdated or worse, dangerous, then it should
be broken. The S?lensmindes are talking about breaking the rules regarding writing computer programs but they apply to every situation, including classrooms. People who consider themselves creative, which includes
students, often feel that they should be rule breakers-after all, this is the time to experiment and leave caution to the stuffy old people. But this has to be done
with care: "Creative rule breaking is what separates the good from the really good, the mundane from the sublime. Its also what turns the good into the terrible" (S?lensminde and
S?lensminde, 2008). Students often break rules for two reasons; either they dont know the rule exists or they dont think it applies, which reduces their approach to this: "1. Ignore
