Benefits will include increased effectiveness and efficiency in the way that the company operates in terms of individuals and teams and the ability of the firm to leverage the employee
skills and competencies. Where the wrong member of staff is chosen, or the recruitment selection has not identified particular risks or difficulties with a potential employee there may be increased
costs. These may include a higher level of training, support, disciplinary procedures and even termination procedures. There is also the indirect cost associated with hiring and an appropriate employee; with
potential negative impacts on the workplace environment. The level of importance and degree to which these different issues may impact on the organisation will depend upon both the organisation, the
position of the employee and the tasks that are being undertaken. These indicate the way in which selection and recruitment should be seen not only as a task to put
people in jobs, but as a strategic part of the organisation gaining and retaining long-term resources or assets. This argument that recruitment and selection should be strategic is backed up
with a plethora of data that indicates the value of employees and the way that competitive advantage may be gained through human capital (Porter, 1985, Mintzberg et al, 2003).
Any business will have numerous goals. These may be complimentary or contradictory, however, it will not be possible for a company to realise all
