television set. They do what they are told and listen to everyone from Katie Couric to Dr. Phil to Dr. Laura. Rather than listening to a host of information, mulling
it over and making up their own minds, they simply go along with what the majority think or what they are told by someone whom they admire. It seems that
in todays day and age, critical thinking is rare. First, how is critical thinking defined? Critical thinking is what it sounds like. Rather than accepting a "fact" that is
given or thrown out there, one is compelled to play the devils advocate or scrutinize the information for holes. One must take a critical view of something in order to
do this. A story may be told, but rather than accept all of the facts, an individual asks questions and wonders whether or not the truth is really on the
table. For example, many people simply "know" that O.J. Simpson is guilty of murder. How do they know this? There were no witnesses so really, their guess is as good
as anybodys. Looking at the evidence, they conclude that he must have done it, even though a jury of his peers found him not guilty. On one hand, the majority
used critical thinking skills to deduce that he did it. They looked at the various pieces of evidence--the DNA found on Nicoles fence, the driver who had to wait twenty
minutes for O.J. to show up, the bloody glove found at the scene and the residence--and then came to the conclusion that O.J. is guilty. Of course, those who do
not think he is guilty also went through the evidence to come to the conclusion that he is innocent. They say that his demeanor was consistent with a man who
