I happen to know of two newlywed couples who did not make it to their first anniversaries and I have to wonder how seriously each of the individuals took their
commitment to marriage. I have seen many examples of this on television as well. On a recent Dr. Phil show, a woman wanted to leave her husband and went on
the show as a last resort. They had three children under the age of five, two of whom were from a former marriage. Today, such situations are not rare. It
appears that it is easy to opt out of marriage, which is a purportedly life long commitment. A student writing on this subject will want to transition to the broader
topic of commitment. Of course, commitment to marriage is important, but it is only a small part of commitment in a general sense. Commitment also goes to work and first
family life as well as ones attachment to community. Robert Putnam in his famous essay Bowling Alone claimed that there has been an erosion of social capital. Indeed, the commitment
to community has faded as people move up in the world by moving on, and barely get to know their neighbors. One could say that such individuals are committed to
their jobs at least, and that is true. However, much of that "commitment" is not to an employer or the workplace that is filled with human beings, but rather to
the call of money. After all, most movers and shakers would in a heart beat switch firms for a salary increase. In fact, in todays business world, many executives acquire
