by the "American dream" can be somewhat constraining. For example, it is widely assumed in America that if one is to be at all successful, one must attend college and
get a high-paying job. For decades, since the inception of the G.I. Bill at the end of World War II, this has been the case. However, in recent years, as
the number of college graduates begins to outweigh the high-paying jobs that await them, more and more people, such as Mike Rustigan of the Los Angeles Times, are suggesting that
perhaps college is not for everyone. This is a point on which I tend to agree. The purpose of college, for the most part, is to provide individuals with academic
programs of study in preparation for entering specific types of jobs where abstract knowledge or highly specialized training is required (business, medicine, philosophy, and so on). However, the structure of
society demands that other roles be fulfilled, such as "skilled labor" jobs, for which college is not adequate preparation. At the very least, a cultural change to accept the equal
usefulness of vocational training for students who prefer to learn a trade rather than go to college seems as if it would be beneficial. Instead of disparaging those individuals who
choose not to go to college, one might instead cultivate the talents they possess towards the development of a talent that would be useful both to them and to society
as a whole. As Rustigan writes in his article, "when you offer these same kids the right form of education, they flourish" (Rustigan, 2010). Unfortunately, the cultural focus on college
does not permit viable alternatives through which these individuals might be directed towards these educational opportunities. Therefore, the country is arbitrarily depriving itself of the development of a strong industrial
