but in truth, blood donation is important in this society. The Red Cross notes that while people consider that they have a right to receive blood, they really do not consider their responsibility in giving it ("Why donate blood," 2007). This is an idea that makes sense. Someone has to donate blood because blood is needed and it cannot be manufactured. Therefore, is up to every citizen to do his or her share. How much blood is necessary in order to sustain the needs of the population? It seems that in order to meet all patient needs, the Red Cross has to collect more than 6 million donations per year ("Why donate blood," 2007). Many people do not stop to thinking where the blood comes from or why it is so important to help replenish the supply. While in some parts of the country, the hospitals are able to sustain a supply with local donors, large medical centers usually need more blood than what is found in the local community ("Why donate blood," 2007). In other words, they cannot keep pace with the amount of blood required to help the sick and injured. The Red Cross helps to facilitate the gathering of blood and distribution through the nation ("Why donate blood," 2007). While the Red Cross does a good job, there are parts of the country that seem to endure numerous shortages, something that could be eliminated if only more people would agree to become donors ("Why donate blood," 2007). While more donors are needed, another suggestion is for donors to contribute more often.
