farce, rather than a simple comedy. This is perhaps seen in the subtitle of the work: "A Trivial Comedy for Serious People." In this one sees that it is more than a comedy for it is aimed at an audience who is particularly serious, and perhaps intelligent, or of presumed intelligence. One author notes that, "A farce is a comic play in which the audience is asked to accept impossible or highly improbable situations for the time being" (Theatre Database). In a farce the people are supposed to seem real, whereas a comedy presents people who are often not believable in terms of situations. "[T]hey must move about in real situations, or at least such as we can give credence to. In a farce, then, what the characters do is of more importance than what they are" (Theatre Database). This last assessment sets the stage for understanding the characters of Gwendolyn and Cecily. In many respects they are the same person for who they ultimately are is of no importance it seems. What they do is the important element in the development of the play. They are, in other words, non-entities aside from how they behave and what they do. Who they are is of little, if any, importance. With that in mind the following paper examines the two characters separately and then together in a discussion, in relationship to their role in the play by Wilde.
