banks and brokerage houses failed and although there are many reasons, one is surely the lack of accountability. The CEOs and others in positions of authority were not accountable to
anyone for their behavior, and so they did as they pleased. Or perhaps its better to say that they were accountable to their shareholders, who didnt stop to question the
officials methods as long as they were making record profits. If there were no accountability in society in general, then there would be no law, because no one would
be held accountable for their crimes. Murderers, thieves, rapists, burglars-all could simply go free and continue their activities. If no one were accountable in the medical field, no one would
have to answer for the mistakes that take the very lives they should be saving. If no one were accountable in government, there would be no one to go to
when taxes soared, onerous legislation was passed, wars were started, etc. In short, society would collapse unless people in charge can be identified as such, and held accountable for their
actions. This is true in all walks of life, but well turn now to how it operates in the business environment. Denise Hellekson says that the best leaders lead by
personal accountability, which she defines as a "form of trustworthiness; being answerable to someone for something, or being responsible for ones conduct" (Hellekson, 2006, p. 1). Everyone seems to agree
