Adolescence is considered one of the most crucial periods of socialization because of the very pressure it places upon the youth. There is a tremendous
burden for teens to perform within their respective peer groups, whether that means to be cool, smart, pretty or popular. For those who do not fit these predetermined molds,
being accepted by their peers can be a difficult maneuver, often creating ill-will, jealousy and feelings of inadequacy. Once shunned as an outcast for not fitting in, those feelings
can follow a person around for the rest of his or her life, affecting every facet with its negativity. On the other hand,
adolescents who are revered by their peers are fortified with encouragement, esteem and adulation that translates into a positive self-image that walks through life with them. Their outlook is
one of confidence and accomplishment because of the reinforcements they received early on from their peer group. Unlike the outcast who could find no niche to call his own
and thus feels isolated and unwanted, the popular youth revels in the notoriety of being one of the "in" crowd. Incidents that occur
during the formative adolescent years are ones that remain with a person for the rest of his or her life. Peer groups are instrumental in providing both the negative
