in early education settings is invaluable. It is the best way to learn about and understand each child in that environment. Foreman and Hall (2005) identify five reasons to observe
children: If we watch them play, we learn about their interests. For instance, one child really likes to play with little cars and another child likes building things with blocks.
Observation allows us to assess the developmental level of each child. For example, one child is able to kick a ball in a specific direction while another one cannot complete
that task. This could suggest a delay in grow motor coordination for the first child. We can learn about each childs strategies to achieve their goals when we observe them.
One child joins a group and becomes a cooperative playmate while another walks up to a group and takes a toy they are using. Observation also informs us of the
skills a child needs to learn and practice. For example, one child is able to string beads and other child just cant get even one bead on the string. Observing
children during play provides insight into their personalities. (Foreman and Hall, 2005). For example, a child seems to hold back from approaching groups while another joins in freely. The
