The more that is known about the development of memory, the greater will be the possibility of helping people correct memory problems and/or not lose ones ability to remember as age creeps in. Ones memory is essential in everyday life (North Dakota State University 2002). The definition of memory inherently describes its importance: "memory is the place where information is stored" (North Dakota State University 2002). Anyone who doubts the importance of memory need only consider what their life would be like if they sat there like an empty blob, no memory means no thoughts. Each of us is dependent upon our memory for everything we do; this is the way we store and retrieve information. Our memory helps us in our daily lives with people, dates, places, and events from knowing a persons name to knowing when there is a deadline at work. Memories, in the grandest sense gives us continuity and stability in our communities, in our families, in our lives. The human memory is a very complex system that is not fully understood and maybe never will be. It is affected by neurobiological factors, psychological factors and cognitive factors. There is a vast amount of information about the human memory and how it develops. It is not complete information, as already mentioned. Memory ability incorporates numerous interacting systems functioning at different levels. These systems include: motivation systems, attention, neurotransmitters and hormones (Cardoso, 2002). Memory is not just one thing, it is a number of skills that are both independent and interdependent (Cardoso, 2002).
