once, they thought, their children would come first. Of course, the illusion that education could be fixed with one fell swoop of a politicians pen is a bit optimistic. After all, public education in America has been failing and few contradict that claim. Hence, the bill was a welcome addition to the maze of fixes proposed for education. At least, the federal government was becoming involved. And to some extent, the bill provided a sense that all children should be treated equally. It was a good thing. Yet, there has been much noise coming from the educational community since the bill was passed and implemented. Teachers are up in arms as they feel that they have to teach to the test and prove themselves in a sea of legislation that does nothing but stifle creativity and halt real learning. Of course, others see it as being a safeguard for their children as tenured teachers cling to jobs for which they are no longer qualified. Indeed, there is little competition in education today and George Bush, at least to an extent, is giving it the boost it needs so that school systems will strive for excellence. No matter how one feels about the No Child Left Behind Act, it is hard to dismiss the problems it has brought for some populations. For example, it seems that children who have difficulty with the English language will have difficulty with the new law. They simply do not test as well primarily due to the language barrier. ELL children seem to be inordinately affected and for those who have ELL kids, or have such groups in their schools, the problem suggests that the schools will get a reduced amount of funding.
