Others do not see much value in the life of an animal and in fact there is a great debate concern the treatment of animals by humans. The health care industry has made use of animals for everything from research to teaching (Frey 358). The search for medical benefits seems to be the motivation for using animals, as they themselves rarely if ever benefit from such research (358). Thus, the ethical dilemma, according to Frey, is what exactly does justify the systematic use of animals in this fashion, when it only benefits humans (358)? The answer likely lies in the fact that this is a Judeo-Christian society that bases the animal kingdom hierarchy on the bible which claims that man has dominion over animals. To some, that means man can do what he will with them. In olden times, and even in some religions today, animal sacrifices were used. Although there is a trend away from animal abuse, the mainstream still advocates the use of animals for medical testing. Still, Frey suggests that most who do think that animal experimentation, in the name of medical progress, is justified do not really address the fundamental philosophical question (Frey 358). He notes that if we are morally serious people we should be able to justify some actions which involve intentional infliction of pain and suffering, and even death, on these feeling creatures (358). Also, failure to event address the question leaves the field open for antivivisectionists to be the dominant force and finally, by not looking at the question there is a suspicion in peoples minds that justification of the use of animals in human health care cannot be given (358).
