Part of the reason for this is that the capitalist system was thought to be responsible for creating a wide chasm between the haves and the "Have nots" and after a time, communism would fulfill all of mans desires. It is a rather simplistic and na?ve view of things. People today point to failed communist systems and throw Marx out as a credible theorist, but Karl Marx continues to be studied in universities around the world. His ideas are astounding. One reason why some do not take him seriously is the fact that so many communist systems failed, but that is not because Marx was wrong. It was because when communism was implemented in the twentieth century, it was done so by ruthless dictators. They were only concerned with power and not with the needs of the people. Further, the implementation of communism was not done at all in the way that Marx would have envisioned. While it is true that the actual cases of communist governance cannot be thought of as true Marxism, many leaders would support Marx and see him as a hero. This is probably why people equate communism with Marxs brand, but this is simply an illusion. The actual cases of communist governance is really not Marxism in its purest sense. Some mock the Manifesto, claiming that it is flawed, while also claiming that Marxism was never really practiced. Crook writes: "Perhaps communism as practiced in the 20th century was indeed a per-version of what Marx intended. Perhaps not-since he never explained what he intended, it is hard to say" ...
