a regional one. As Americans we enjoy a quality of life which far exceeds that led by the majority of the world. While we are somewhat concerned about poverty
when it is found within our own national boundaries, we tend to dismiss poverty in other regions of the world as irrelevant. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Poverty has direct association not only with the exhaustion of world resources but also with deep festering discontent. When common resources such as air, water, oil reserves, and
unique species of plants and animals are exhausted as a direct reflection of world poverty we are likely to give world poverty a little more consideration. When our sacred
lands are invaded and our homes taken from us because of world poverty we are certain to stand up and notice. Poverty touches
old and young, black and white, yellow and red. Poverty touches males and it touches females. It has become a highly visible blight on both the strongest and
wealthiest and the weakest and poorest nations on Earth. Partially as a result of poverty in other regions of the world, our own sense of security has somewhat eroded.
This is true not only from a security threat standpoint that the discontent peoples of less fortunate regions of the world tend to represent but also from an economic
standpoint. Even in the U.S. there are impacts from world poverty. As the poor from other nations flood in and
