years after its implementation, there was a rally promulgated by an AFL-CIO convention to protest against President Clintons plans to expand the treaty (Greenhouse, 1997). But in fact, NAFTA was
not a Democrats invention. Still, Clinton grudgingly went along with it years ago. The AFL-CIO September, 1997 protest is a kind of deja vu. The organization railed against NAFTA in
1993 unsuccessfully (Greenhouse, 1997). While this labor union was concerned with jobs, NAFTA spawns other controversies as well. There is the unfair match of a large world power and a
poor country such as Mexico. How do the Mexican people fare? Then there are environmental concerns and the immigration problems at Americas southern border. NAFTA does have an impact on
the United States relations with Mexico as well as how America is seen by the rest of the world. The implications of NAFTA are enormous. Yet, while NAFTA holds many
intangible ramifications, there are results of this agreement that has affected Americans a great deal. United States firms have had to adjust, and continue to make adjustments as a result
of the implementation of this treaty. Some of the adjustments that firms would have to make, or might like to make, are in the areas of personnel and environmental law.
Companies must comply with regulations pertinent to the environment due to the treaty and they also have the opportunity to move factories to Mexico. Such moves could displace workers in
the United States and create a poor image for these American companies that will sacrifice quality and loyalty for money. In other words, labor is cheaper in Mexico. This point
was exemplified in a now infamous televised debate. The referenced debate took place between Vice President Al Gore and Ross Perot, in November, 1993 when Perot mockingly made a loud
