feelings of alienation and isolation. When discussing the media the common approach is to perceive the media as the mass media tools, such as television, radio and the press. However, the media is much broader than these limited formats, OShaughnessy and Sadler (2008) include a wide definition of media, which incorporates the above mediums as well as cinema, video games, mobile telephones, computers and the Internet. Instead of defining media simply by the mediums, it is the characteristics which are utilized to define media, seeing it as a human communication system, which usually house the target of reaching large audiences, and will usually take place so that communication can be facilitated across large distances and often be influenced by commercial interests (OShaughnessy and Sadler, 2008). Therefore, when defining the media is not limited to current formats, but may be expanded into new formats such may emerge in the future (Flew, 2007). When considering the way the media has developed historically, from the development of the first Gutenberg printing press of the 16th century through to todays multimedia world and the proliferation of the Internet, it may be argued that the media has had the ability to impact on the lives of individuals and communities in a number of ways. The main influences, especially with tools such as multimedia, the internet as well as mobile communication which may also use the internet, is the aspect of convergence, allowing different people, communities and knowledge to converge, the virtuality facilitating the creation of new communities and participation within those community of remote and diverse people, which also reflect the impact of globalization and the way that people can be more interactive than ever in the past.
