The educational system was nearly destroyed and all advances in the sciences and literature came to a halt. The formation of youth vigilantes known as the Red Guard
resulted in unprecedented violence and chaos. The actual effect of the Cultural Revolution varied according to the nature and morality of the different groups of people in different locations within
the nation of China. ONSET OF THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION On August 5, 1966, it was a typical hot day on the continent of Asia and in all of the large
cities and small villages of China. On that day, the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution which had been announced two months before actually took hold. This marked the date
on which the young people of China were called into action, to leave their schools and colleges and to participate in the revolution that would lead to the class-less society
envisioned by one of the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party, Mao Zedong. On that date, Mao Zedong called for all the citizens of China to rise up and
to rid the Chinese Community Party of all of Maos rivals and enemies and to take control of their country through his leadership (Beech, 2003. Mao sent his message through
out the vast nation of China by broadcasts on the radio (Beech, 2000). It was through these broadcasts and by word of mouth that the general population of China
