changes which were the direct result of the Civil War forever changed the way Americans lived, worked and played. During the War, technological advancements came fast and furious, but
this acquired technology would not be confined to the battlefield. It would permeate all of the American landscape, East/West, North/South, and would eventually even find its way into American
households. There is a general consensus that the conduct of the American Civil War is a direct reflection on the increasing reliance upon the "fruits of the industrial revolution" (Drew
and Snow PG). In the opinion of many historians, it was the first modern war, but others believe that its legacy is more that of a transition between the
type of limited warfare which characterized the eighteenth century and the automated and mechanized mass-destruction warfare which evolved throughout the twentieth century (Drew and Snow PG). Nevertheless, it cannot
be denied that the American Civil War contributed greatly to the transportation innovations upon which contemporary society has become extremely dependent. While the first railroads appeared in America approximately
thirty years prior to the outbreak of war, they were limited to a few heavily-populated urban areas. However, during the War, it was discovered that armies on both sides
could be more expediently transported to strategic locations by rail (Drew and Snow PG). Along with canals, the construction of railroads commenced at a breakneck pace after the war,
