the book, particularly what it means to those who read it. Discussion The book is non-fiction and details Mitch Alboms relationship with his old sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz, in the
last months of Schwartzs life. Like most people, Albom had intended to keep in touch with his favorite professor after he left school, and like most people, he didnt do
so. He lost track of Schwartz until one night he saw him on television, on Ted Koppels Nightline, talking about death and dying (Albom, 1997). Albom was shocked to realize
how ill Morrie was, and got in touch with him immediately. As a result, Morrie asked Albom to visit him, and the result was the book, what Albom says is
the last class his "old professor" ever taught: "The class met on Tuesdays. It began after breakfast. The subject was The Meaning of Life. It was taught from experience" (Albom,
1997, p. 1). There were no grades, but there were "oral exams each week. You were expected to respond to questions, and you were expected to pose questions of your
own" (Albom, 1997, p. 1). The discussions covered the really important subjects, such as love, family, work, aging and death (Albom, 1997). There was no graduation; instead there was a
funeral (Albom, 1997). The few months that Albom saw Morrie every Tuesday are probably the most important of his life, because of the lessons he learned. What a reader can
take from this is first, that Morrie was a great teacher. Even as he lay dying he was still teaching. In fact, he decided that he "would not be ashamed
of dying" (Albom, 1997, p. 10). That reflects his sociological training and his undying interest in human behavior-he decides to turn his dying into an experiment so that others can
