of closer economic ties has been an inevitable outcome of the agreement and as a result there has been a gradual move towards and adoption if a single currency; the
Euro. Formerly called the Ecu it was re-launched and renamed, partly in order to get away from the poor reputation it had regarding its implementation and adoption by the member
states. The use of the currency in the member states for the bond markets had been seen to occur gradually with more ands more bond issues taking place in Euros.
This become more apparent when the initial transition stage was entered, and the currencies were pegged. Therefore, the Euro bond market may have been seen to start to develop before
the currency was in practical existence. This has impacted on many bond markets, the impact on the more well known markets such as Germany has been well documented, however, countries
that are less dominant in the EU have also been impacted, and not necessarily in the manner that was expected. This can be seen clearly if we look to countries
such as Italy and Greece. When we look at the many advantages that were seen, these were realised before the activating date of the currency as a traded medium. These
include the reduction in transactions costs, a lower risk of exchange rate fluctuation as well as a higher level of transparency. Shares were already traded and quoted in Euros and
