Before television, it is true that people would visit with their neighbors or read more often, but once television rose to popularity, it had increased its influence over time. Even a generation ago, television was not so important. It began as something with only a handful of channels and grew to something that supports cable transmission, satellite transmission, and now, the latest addition is high definition television. People purchase screens that fill a room and living rooms now look more like theaters than places to sit and talk. What has been more important than the invention of television as it affects the social environment? It is hard to think of anything else. People watch television from morning until night and some have even become addicted to it, or at least to their favorite shows. The invention of the television is just as complex as its manifestation. It had sprung from the ideas of more than one man. It was in 1922 that Edwin Belin created a device that was much like a television ("Who is the inventor of television," 2006). He had already been given a patent for "the transmission of photographs by wire as well as fiber optics and radar" ("Who is the inventor of television," 2006). What his device did was to take light and direct them to a selenium element that was also attached to an electronic device ("Who is the inventor of television," 2006).
