among citizens. Discussion Street crime has a definite negative impact on society, most disproportionately on the elderly who may opt to stay inside because of fear of becoming a crime
victim. But the fears of street crime and the reality are not the same. There are some surprising things about street crime, and some that have been known for a
long time. First, most victims of street crime are men, with the single exception of rape; most perpetrators are male as well (Epstein, 2001). Many women feel that they are
at great risk, but statistically this is untrue, except as noted in the case of rape (Epstein, 2001). Street crime seems to be almost entirely a male preserve. It
is also a crime of the young: "Most people arrested for committing a crime AND most victims of crime are less than 25 years of age" (Epstein, 2001). There is
something of a doubled-edged sword in this statistic: as people age, they become more sophisticated and more aware of the world around them, including crime (Epstein, 2001). But they also
may find that they are more fearful than ever before-despite the fact that they are usually not the targets of street crime; however, if their fear keeps them inside, there
is a chance that they are not victims simply because they are not on the streets as frequently as younger people (Epstein, 2001). However, older people are also more likely
to think about the "consequences of their actions and therefore avoid criminal activity" (Epstein, 2001). Street crime and crime in general occurs more frequently in "warm weather and in warmer
