the seedier side of life. Many novels use the backdrop as a setting. In fact, Bangkok, Thailand is a notorious place for sex and drugs and while the city
has enjoyed this poor reputation for some time, some wonder whether or not it is due to the fact that it is a developing country. Still, its negative reputation is
hard to shake. Iyer (2003) describes the city like this: "Bangkok, we all know, is a paradise of earthly delights, just exotic enough to make visitors feel theyve had a
glamorous adventure, even if theyve only been sampling sex and drugs and rock n roll" (p.58). Although the reputation of Thailand is something that is not in dispute, some
defend the people, suggesting that they need money so they prostitute their daughters and sell drugs to children. They also abuse drugs to ameliorate the negative effects of a life
of destitution. Yet, the people are not bad people as portrayed by some media. They do not want to be entrenched in this sordid and illegal lifestyle in which
many find themselves. In fact, Thailand is largely a Buddhist nation that are quite superstitious ("Police ban," 2003). To an extent, the people are traditional and spiritual. Yet, the
nation is entrenched in an atmosphere of sex and drugs. The sex trade thrives in this region and Thailand is notorious for its prostitutes, including those who are underage.
Yet, the participation in these illegal industries seems to be something that the people are drawn to due to their financial burdens. While the women and girls sell their bodies
so they can live, large corporations are making money off of cheap labor too. To many who oppose globalization, it is the evil west that has turned these small developing
