took place. Women were looked at as emotional, mysterious, and no match intellectually for their male counterparts. Yet the empress of the time was an outstanding ruler. One woman fought
for equality while embracing the monarchy, while another was one of the earliest proponents of democracy. Many women spawned centers of intellectual ferment by generating, sponsoring, and maintaining their salons.
From this brief discussion at least two questions arise that need answering: What is the role of women during the Enlightenment? How does this role differ from that of the
male philosophers? The role of women during the Enlightenment was different from that of male philosophers. Her role was actually to break out of her ignorance. It is
not as if women were not smart. However, women of the Enlightenment were not educated and in fact they were banned from institutions of higher learning (Hesse, 2001) . One
can see that the role of women was to get out of the stereotyped roles in which they were placed and to strike out on their own. They would be
heard eventually, but it was only small voices that were allowed to come through. Wollstonecraft was perhaps the only women to truly write like the male philosophers of the day.
She was the exception. While by and large, the people saw women as having a subservient place in society, some male authors like Defoe and Mill would stand out in
support of womens rights. Today, males sometimes do support womens rights and do write about it, but in those days it seems as if the impetus was on men alone.
In the present, there are a slew of feminist authors and just women who write. Men and women are on an even keel which was not true of the day.
