perception of proximity is a general concept which can be applied to many subject areas, which relates to the way in which to objects or subjects may be perceived as
relating to each other, being close or similar, or being far apart and different (Council of Europe, 1998). For example, in terms of political and cultural proximity United Kingdom may
have a perception of proximity take that indicates a high level of similarity with the United States, due to the common Anglo-American culture seen with much of the shared media,
political ideas with the preference for democracies and similar economic structures dominated by capitalist ideals. When considering this in the context of
the European Union there are inherent differences between the different member states. However, membership of the union creates commonalities and increases the scope of common interests and the approach developed
as a result of EU law supports harmonization of values. These all reduce the perceived proximity between the members of the Union, as the differences decreases, and those which remain
becomes less alien as the member states become desensitised to those differences. The distances s the perspectives on proximity between the members internally reduce in terms of the distance this
places an increased emphasis on the proximity of external actors. Increased commonalities with neighbours emphasises the differences of others. Increased strength in numbers increase confidence in ones own perspective being
that this is preferable; smaller nations with fewer international ties have to adopt a more multicultural in their international relations. Looking at the way that the perspective of proximity
