addiction was viewed as wrong because the object of the addiction was itself illegal. For a much longer period in history, there have been moralistic arguments against addiction on the
basis of its violation of social and cultural norms such as the "virtue of temperance". In more contemporary sociological discourse, however, the most catastrophic impact of addiction is generally regarded
to be the effect which addiction has upon the structure of families in which one member is addicted. In particular, children of addicted parents often tend to suffer considerable traumatic
effects as a result of exposure to addictive behavior, including greater susceptibility to addiction themselves, greater difficulties in forming stable relationships, and in general, lesser quality of occupational choices. This
paper will explore the phenomenon of addiction explicitly in the context of the adverse impacts visited upon the adult children of alcoholic parents. This paragraph helps the student begin
to define some of the hypotheses that will be examined in the course of this essay. In order to accurately and effectively determine the true scope of the impact upon
adult children of alcoholic parents, one must recognize that such data cannot easily or readily be quantified. Therefore, qualitative measurements are in order, and to be effective, one must develop
certain categories of phenomena to qualitatively measure. These may most appropriately be expressed as hypotheses to be tested through a review of existing peer-reviewed literature on the topic in question.
