rules and social mores that affects the behavior of everyone in an organization" ("Organizational," 2002). While organizational climate goes to corporate culture, industry and a number of elements, it is
also true that sometimes things beyond the companys control affect the climate and this affects morale. In todays day and age for example, downsizing can affect morale and productivity rather
quickly. Atkins (2000) states the obvious when he says that morale is generally better when a company is in the black. He goes on to contend that even for those
that are not, how organizations manage financial difficulties has an effect on the work force (2000). He explains that when either an organization or an individual is under pressure,
there will be tempers flaring as everyone wonders who will be the next to go (2000). When people have to leave in order to get higher pay, that hurts morale.
One begins to hear that either someone is leaving the company, or that he or she was fired or that someone is just looking around. This creates a serious level
of discomfort and even the future of the company is challenged by such rumors. A Wall Street Journal article claims that while penny-pinching can hurt morale such as
eliminating the free coffee pot, asking employees to use budget hotels or fly coach on short trips is not really harmful ("Belt," 2001). Thus, when making cuts, it might be
better to make them where they will not be as noticeable. In other words, travel cuts may be more conducive to a better climate than cuts that affect the entire
