The scientific literature supports the contention that lifestyle choices play a critical role in many aspects of our health and welfare. The literature suggests, in fact,
that even such potentially fatal diseases as cancer can be impacted by choices to which we subject our bodies. Our propensity to be stricken with breast cancer and cervical
cancer, for example, are believed to be associated in part with very specific lifestyle choices. Each of these conditions is related to cellular reproduction and each can have direct
ties to nutrition. Almost two-thirds of all cancers are related to lifestyle choices such as dietary factors and exercise, factors which unlike genetic
propensity for a disease can be changed easily (Wilby, 1998). Of the total number of incidents of cancer over one-third can be directly related to nutrition (Wilby, 1998).
The interaction of genetics, hormones, nutrition and exercise is critical in determining propensity for cancer (McGee, 1997). Physiologically, breast cancer and
cervical cancer are the result of improper cell division. Several dietary components can be associated with this division. Numerous aspects of cell cycle progression change when cells become
cancerous. One of these aspects is the proto-oncoprotein c-Src (Taylor and Shalloway, 1997). C-Src is required for cellular division and appears to be important in the reproduction of
cancerous cells as well as normal cells (Taylor and Shalloway, 1997). A complexity of systems and processes are impacted by nutrition.
