to strategize and utilize organizational campaigns puts him in history as one of the most formidable military men of all time. The following paper examines the impact Napoleon had on
the art and science of war, and his impact on operational art. The Impact of Napoleon on the Art and Science of War In first understanding Napoleons impact
on the art and science of war, and operational art it is perhaps imperative to understand something of operational art. One author notes that, "Between strategy and tactics is operational
art, a concept neither wholly offensive nor defensive in nature but one closely related to the spirit of maneuver (with which it is sometimes equated)" (Tanner, 2002; 305). Tanner
(2002) indicates that it does not necessarily matter what size the forces are in determining whether or not it is operational but that the operation involves a level of warfare
that combines "battles-and battle avoidance-with terrain and marches to achieve results in support of strategic ends without necessarily achieving those ends" (Tanner, 2002; 305). Napoleon was quite effective in
the art and science of war, and also in operational art as he was capable of planning and executing campaigns which achieved "strategic objectives within a theater of operations" (Epstein,
1995; 185). Epstein (1995) indicates that Napoleon was quite influential in the evolution of warfare, and the emergence of modern warfare. In truth, military leaders to follow would study Napoleon
to a great extent, notably many leaders in the American Civil War. But, in relationship to his impact, and his involvement and success Epstein (1995) provides the follwing analysis: "Napoleon
