These were the hopes of Mexico when they entered into NAFTA with the United States and Canada. There were some concerns in the US regarding the potential migration of
jobs to the lower cost southern country, where wages were lower, but for Mexico there was an optimism that the agreement would result in increase foreign direct investment and more
jobs as well as increased trade as a result of the countries comparative advantage. Looking across to Europe these have been the benefits found by many EU members once they
have joined the free trade area. However, the results for Mexico are less clear, there have been changes as a result of NAFTA membership, but it cannot be claimed that
the agreement have revolutionized the economy. To consider the way that NAFTA has affected on Mexico it is necessary to look at the impact it has had on the economy.
When looking at the business statistics it appears that between 1994 when NAFTA came into effect and 2008 there has been a significant increase in trade between Mexico and
the US, much of this the direct result of the trade agreement. The exports from Mexico to the US have increased, in the agricultural sector there has been an increase
of 200% on farm exports, this has been accompanied by an increased level of maize production of more than 400% (Cevallos, 2008). Mexico is also the top exporter of several
