the development and continuation of globalisation. The drive to increase profits by taking advantages of other markets to sell goods, or to sources goods in different countries due to comparative
advantages has been a pulling force whilst maturing markets and increased competition in the home market has been a pushing force. For the countries to which the multinationals have been
attracted the pull for the states has been increased income and the potential to better the economy with both financial investment and the transfer of knowledge.
To consider this we first need to define what we mean by a multinational corporation. A multinational corporation or organisation may also be known as
a multinational enterprise, this has been defined by Hofstede (1997) as an organisation that has an integrated philosophy that permeates al then operations, both national and global operations.
The evidence of influence can be seen when
looking at some of the larger corporations in terms of financial. For example, of the worlds 100 largest economies, only 49 are countries, the remaining 51% are corporations (Anderson and
Cavanagh n.d.). This starts to indicate the level of economic power that can be held by the multinational corporations. If we look
at the level of the top 200 corporations the total combined sales will equate to more than the combined world economy with only the deduction of the top ten (Anderson
and Cavanagh n.d.). This power is also increasing, in 1983 the top 200 corporations accounted for 25% of the global GDP, by 1999 this had increased to 27.5% of the
