a good potential investment (van Clieaf, 2001). This indicates that, at least to some extent, success and company performance are associated with the leadership (van Clieaf, 2001). The question is
to what extent does, or can, leadership impact on the success, or failure, of a company? When determining what impact leadership can have on the success of an organization, the
first consideration has to be how success is measured. The dictionary definition of success, according to the American Heritage Dictionary is "The achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted" (Dictionary.com,
2009). Therefore, success needs to be considered in the context of the plans or goals, which may vary dependant on the type of organization. For profit and not for profit
organizations are likely to have different goals, and as such different measures of success; for non profit organizations, which may include government organizations and charities, there are likely to be
specific performance goals that relate to actions with part of the goals relating to financial outcomes, such as staying within a budget. For profit organizations are likely to have a
number of goals, but in order to survive there will be the need to create a profit. This does not mean it is purely by profit that a firm will
be judged as successful, but a lack of it is likely to result in a judgment of unsuccessful. The reason for investment by investors is invariability the desire to create
